"What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think." --Ralph Waldo Emerson
I spent a lot of time in middle school worrying about pleasing others. Constantly, I would find myself going crazy wondering if I said the right things or wondering how my friends would react. I even changed a few of my opinions hoping it would make them like me more. It wasn't until eighth grade that I started to realize that there were reasons I had friends, and it wasn't because I always agreed with them. From then on, I tried to be myself, and life just got that much easier. My mind was no longer consumed with insecure thoughts, and I could relax a little. I find Emerson's words to be inspiring, especially on those days when I don't feel confident in myself. His words are a reminder that other people don't define me, and if they don't like me, then that's their problem. Why worry about gaining respect from those who will only make my life more difficult?
