Jordan's Hunch About Birth Order
I am the oldest of five children in my family. Although there are a lot of resemblances between my younger siblings and I, our personalities are quite different. Often I’ve wondered how different my life would be--how different I would be--if I hadn’t been the first born. I believe that through the different experiences and upbringings each sibling lives through, our personalities are altered, and I plan to prove this theory with my research project.
My youngest sibling, Ethan, is nine years younger than I. He has grown up in a pampered world being the baby of the family, and being surrounded by resources (Wii, internet, etc.) that I never had access to when I was little. To be honest, I think he’s a little spoiled, but aren’t most youngest children spoiled? It only adds to the personality differences between the oldest and youngest sibling, specifically independence. While I learned to use my resources to get what I want or need, Ethan just goes to a big brother or sister for help if our parents aren’t around. I feel that independence is one of the personality traits most affected by birth order, so I plan to study this in depth throughout my research.
This research project won’t be the first time I’ve thought about how birth order affects personality, but it will be the first time I will actually research the topic. I think The Birth Order Book: Why You Are the Way You Are by Dr. Kevin Leman would be a good source of information. The novel seems to spend time on specifically talking about the unique personalities of each type of child in the family. The novel also expands to discuss how your birth order personality can affect you later in life.I am excited to dig deeper into learning about birth order vs. personality, and hope to find good, supportive information.
