Jordan’s Plan
I currently have eight secondary sources, seven from eLibrary, one from Psychology today, and one book source, Everything You Need to Know About Birth Order by Katherine Krohn. Most of the websites give information on different studies done on how birth order affects personality, then go on to list the traits for people of each birth order position. Although, many of my sites only confirm or contradict information I’ve found in my other sources.
Birth order is definitely not the only factor affecting personality, as clarified specifically in “Birth Order: Fun to Debate, but How Important,” a New York Times article by Perri Klass. This article suggests that birth order has nothing to do with personality at all. I plan to use this in my project by talking about the nature vs. nurture conflict. Also, I’ll probably end up compiling all of the various personality traits for each birth-order situation, then go on to present which traits seemed most common among the studies and which traits were uncommon or controversial.
A few of my sources give information on Adler, a philosopher who intensely studied the birth order effect, and also revolutionized the thinking behind it. I plan to talk about him and his studies, and where his studies became biased.
Along with all of the information from my secondary sources, I want to conduct a survey asking about the taker’s birth order and personality. My survey will probably just ask three questions. The first would ask the taker’s birth order. The second question would ask the number of kids in the family, and the third would ask the taker to circle which personality traits they possess (there will be a list). I will use that information gathered to compare with the results from professional studies. Hopefully I can bring together all of my research in a way that everyone can find some truth to the birth order effect (even if it only affects your personality a little bit).
